Route Details

As an island nation, Iceland’s culinary scene is as unique and varied as its landscapes. The harsh climate and limitations on local resources could easily lend themselves to a limited and uninteresting diet of root vegetables and salty fish but instead have inspired deep creativity in the techniques of preservation, fermentation, and preparation.

Your visit will start at the foot of Reykjavik’s most recognizable monument, the Hallgrimskirkja. An imposing structure that rejects traditional architectural traditions, this church sets the scene for the culinary adventure that is to follow. Wandering around the charming and colorful streets of Old Reykjavik, your local expert will lead you through a surprising parade of stops based on your preferences, what is in season, and what is open for the day. You will simultaneously gain a general orientation to the fascinating Icelandic capital.

From just-opened restaurants offering the latest fusion trend, to neighborhood shops serving local fish specialties like Arctic trout or Hákarl, our experts know all of the best spots and have relationships with those working there. No two Reykjavik food tours are alike, and it won’t be long into your first tastings that you will realize that you are on a uniquely special visit. From one place to the next, your expert will give you insight into local traditions–not only will you taste delicious things, but you will understand the care with which the ingredients were grown, raised, or caught. You will leave your gastronomic experience full to the brim, both with surprising and delectable dishes and the memories of where and with whom you tasted them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many stops will be included on my tour?
Each of our Reykjavik food tours varies depending on the day, season, and your preferences, therefore we do not guarantee a specific number of stops. We can, however, assure you that you will have the opportunity to visit at least a few places and will stay as long as you are still tasting and having a great time!

Will I be able to try local drinks with my food?
Yes! The tastings on this tour are inclusive of alcohol and we love sharing our favorite stops for a local beer or unique cocktail.

I don't know much about Icelandic cuisine - what are some of the country's most popular dishes or ingredients, so that maybe I can choose from this list to add to my booking request?
The climate and location of Iceland lends itself to excellent fresh fish and interesting approaches to fermentation and food preservation. Some of the more infamous traditional dishes are fermented shark and boiled sheep’s head–specialties we can certainly arrange for should you be interested in trying! Beyond those delicacies, Iceland is well known for both fresh and preserved fish, free-range lamb, locally sourced dairy and creatively-grown produce.
