Sushi Making Class: Take Home a Taste of Tokyo

Learn how to produce Japan's most famous food with a chef

The Finer Details
If you’re coming to Japan for a trip, it’s likely that one of the reasons you are coming is for the country’s incredible cuisine - and very likely for its sushi. This cooking class will give you an opportunity not just to taste some amazing food but to take the skills of how to make it back home with you.

You will spend up to about three hours in the company of Akemi Castellano, a qualified sushi chef. After meeting you at a nearby subway station, she and her husband, Dan, will welcome you into their home and explain Tokyo’s distinctive sushi style (“Edomae”) to you,  pointing out the differences from other regional styles and explaining how Japan’s capital’s rich history is reflected in its sushi.

After that - and under Akemi’s tutelage - you will prepare four types of sushi before eating them together at her kitchen table. You will leave not only well sated but with a deeper understanding of Japan’s most famous culinary export.

Choose this tour if…

  • You want to not just sample delicious sushi but learn how to make it
  • You desire to get a deeper understanding of sushi culture and what makes Tokyo’s so distinctive
  • You want to have a dining experience in a Japanese home

What You’ll Taste

Four types of Edomae sushi are prepared by you with the help of Akemi, the sushi chef. The ingredients you will work with are carefully selected for freshness and flavour. Akemi uses fish fresh from the fish market on the morning of each session in order to select the very best seafood for your visit. The rice, nori seaweed, and vinegar are also specially selected to give you the very best gastronomic experience possible.

I cannot recommend this experience enough. Akemi and Dan welcome you into their private home and provide an absolutely perfect experience from start to finish. We not only learned the history of the sushi we made, but learned how to properly prepare a fish, make the rice, prepare several different types of sushi, and more. It is important to note that they went above and beyond to accommodate my dietary concerns, which made this experience even more special and enjoyable. Between the education, conversation, and fantastic cuisine, you will not be disappointed!

Akemi and Dan were fantastic instructors with lots of information and knowledge. We had such a terrific time learning the Japanese food culture. The sushi was super good and having the opportunity to be hands on making our meal was just over the top. Highly recommended.
