St. Peter's Basilica Tour

Explore the Basilica and Vatican Grottoes with an expert historian

The Finer Details
Let a local historian lead you through St. Peter’s Basilica, the biggest church in the world, and give you a detailed look at major works by Michelangelo, Bernini, and others.

Route Details

You will begin at Via della Conciliazione, a modern processional road built by Mussolini in the 20th century, and from here, enter Bernini’s square, where your expert guide will go over the topography of the Vatican, and the precedents for the church that now stands there.

Once inside the Basilica, your guide will reveal the deeper stories behind the most famous works such as Michelangelo’s Pietà and Bernini’s Baldacchino, and how these masterpieces represent an example of the complex interplay of faith, power, and art throughout the ages.

You will then explore the Vatican Grottoes - the Tomb of the Popes, situated beneath the ancient foundations of the Basilica, and enjoy a rare look at this lesser-known part of the Vatican.

By the end of this St. Peter's Basilica tour, you’ll walk away with a deep understanding of this famed church, not only as a religious site but as a living testament of the connection between art and power.

Our experienced guides are adept at navigating through these challenging conditions and will strive to optimize your tour's route.

Dress Code
Vatican policies require modest attire to respect the sanctity of the site. This generally includes covering shoulders and knees for both men and women. It's also advisable to wear comfortable footwear.

Giulia did an excellent job of guiding us through the Holy Doors and the entire art of St. Peter's, despite the crowds there for the end of the Jubilee Year. We started the tour with a view of St. Peter's as a church, and ended the tour seeing it as one of the world's museum masterpieces thanks to Giulia.

Sandro was an incredible guide. So knowledgeable, friendly, articulate. He helped our family navigate the lines and crowds at St Peter's making it feel easy and intimate. He was also adaptable to our timing and interests, adjusting his tour based on some of our main interests. Would highly recommend Sandro and this tour!

We loved the tour and our guide. She did a great job adapting to our attention span and interests. She knew a lot of history which she presented clearly. . . .
