Itinerary Details

After being picked up at your accommodation in Porto by your Private car and expert guide, you'll begin the day enjoying a leisurely drive while getting to know your expert and the agenda for the day as you head to your first Douro Valley estate.   Your first stop will be an independently owned vineyard where you'll learn the whole process from grape to bottle and enjoy a tasting of a variety of their wines. You may even get to try the homemade olive oil they produce on the estate as well.  We will make a stop for lunch (at one's own expense) at a local restaurant where your expert will be happy to make recommendations to experience the local cuisine.

We'll continue our wine journey after lunch as we visit a top winery in the Douro Valley to learn about and taste the port wines on offer at the estate. We might learn how to pick out flavors, speak about harvests, or discuss the key differences between different ages and processes. You'll drive back to your Porto accommodation well-wined and brimming with your newfound learnings about Douro Valley wines and the history of the region.

FAQ

Where do we meet? Where does it end?
The expert and driver will pick you up and drop you off at your accommodations in Porto.

What if it’s raining?
Tours operate rain or shine, but in the case of inclement weather, your expert will modify the tour so more time is spent indoors. It never hurts to be prepared; we encourage keeping an eye on the weather and bringing along an umbrella, sunscreen, water, or a hat as needed.

What is included in the tour price?
The wine tastings are reserved in advance and paid for by Context. Your lunch cost is not included in the tour price and is at your own expense.

Is this suitable for children and/or travelers with mobility challenges?
We don't recommend this tour for children as its itinerary focuses on the wine country of the Douro Valley. For mobility concerns, with the private car, we can likely adapt the route to your needs and would be happy to discuss it further with you. The wineries do not have stairs, though it is largely dirt cobblestone path,s which would be difficult for wheelchair users.

We had the best day with João Miguel (x2)! We learned a lot about winemaking in the Duoro and the history of the industry, drove through some of the most beautiful landscapes, had a delicious lunch and drank some incredible wines. It was a memorable day that we won’t soon forget. João is a fantastic tour guide with a wealth of knowledge. Highly recommend touring with him. Thank you João!

What a special day for us! Joao.. wow! The driver, amazing! Thank you so much! We’ll never forget this incredible experience. Thank you.

Maria Joao was incredible - we were so excited to spend time with her, an accomplished sommelier and chef! Her extensive knowledge of wine, the Douro Valley, Porto, and Portugal was both entertaining and impressive, making the experience unforgettable. We thoroughly enjoyed the wine tasting at Quinta do Cume, the exquisite lunch at Portal, and the delightful port tasting at Symington. Our driver Hugo was a delight—smart, safe, and a pleasure to spend the day with. We have been extremely impressed with the quality of the people hired by Context Travel! The entire experience was exceptional, and we are grateful for the memorable day.
