Milan Architecture Tour

Learn the history and secrets behind Italy’s most modern skyline

The Finer Details
Milan’s skyline stands out and distinguishes itself from other popular Italian destinations. As Italy’s most modern city, Milan’s architecture offers a harmonious blend of historical and contemporary designs. This 3-hour tour takes you through the Porta Venezia district, renowned for its Art Nouveau (in Italian “Liberty”) and Art Deco architecture, and then to Gae Aulenti Square, one of the city’s most innovative and cutting-edge developments.

Route Details

You will begin your tour in the heart of the Porta Venezia district, a neighborhood of rich and multifaceted history. Originally known as Porta Orientale ("Eastern Gate") until 1860, it was one of Milan's historical gates. Starting from the early 1900s, it became a favorite among the Milanese upper-middle class, who enriched the neighborhood with luxurious and richly decorated homes.

The district is home to Villa Necchi Campiglio, a historic residence from the 1930s, surrounded by a peaceful garden and featuring stunning original furniture and décor. It also houses the Public Gardens, Milan's first public park, inaugurated in 1784, which remains a favorite spot for locals to walk or picnic during the warmer months.

Led by an expert guide, you will learn about the historical significance of the neighborhood and its recent transformation into one of Milan’s most elegant and vibrant districts.

After your walk in Corso Venezia, your guide will lead you to Gae Aulenti Square, one of the most significant examples of the massive urban transformation that Milan has undergone over the recent decades, marked by the emergence of innovative skyscrapers.

Inaugurated in December 2012, Piazza Gae Aulenti (or simply “Gae Aulenti”, as the locals call it) is a modern architectural landmark, characterized by futuristic architecture and home to Italy's tallest skyscraper.

We had a wonderful tour of Milan with Thea! She was very friendly, knowledgeable and tailored our tour on the fly to make it the best experience for us. I highly recommend Context Tours and Thea!

We really enjoyed our Milan Architectural Tour. Thea provided us with a great mix of architectural, historical, and cultural information in a friendly and interesting manner. We were especially intrigued and charmed by the "Qudrilatero del Silenzio", (the Silent District), its calm, peaceful atmosphere with an array of elegant and charming designs. We highly recommend Thea and the Milan Architectural Tour.

Thea is a lovely guide. She’s able to show you a part of Milano not normally seen by the average American tourist. I highly recommend her tour. Not only will you learn about some of the interesting architecture of Milan, you will also discover some of Milano’s history and culture. Thea is a lovely guide. Highly recommend
