Painting a Picture of Mexico: A Mural History Tour

Unravel the history of Mexican Murals and discover the ambitious ideas behind the Muralismo movement

The Finer Details
The Mexican Muralist Movement is an influential chapter in modern art history. On this 3-hour tour, your expert will showcase how a generation of post-revolutionary artists transformed public walls into dialogues around social issues and cultural identity.

With your expert by your side, you’ll journey back to the beginning of 20th-century Mexico.  After almost forty years of military dictatorship, Mexico entered a decade of conflict that led to the transformation of Mexican culture and government, eventually resulting in the drafting of the present-day Constitution of Mexico. You’ll learn how the muralist movement emerged from this period, and how figures like Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros refined the role of art within society.

By the end of your tour, you’ll have a deeper connection with Mexico’s artistic legacy and understand how these murals continue to influence artistic movements globally today.

Route Details

Begin your journey at the Museo San Ildefonso, birthplace of the Mexican Muralist Movement. With your expert, you’ll explore early works by Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Learn how their techniques and political beliefs shifted over time in response to the social and cultural upheavals of the time.

From there, you may visit the Museo Vivo del Muralism or the Palacio de Bellas Artes, depending on your interests.

The Museo Vivo del Muralism is housed in the former Ministry of Education building. Home to over 100 murals by Diego Rivera, you’ll trace his artistic and political development over time. Additionally, you’ll also view the first mural to feature Frida Kahlo. If you choose to visit the Palacio de Bellas Artes, you’ll be able to see later works by the movement’s many artists.

Time permitting, you may also visit the Museo Mural Diego RIvera or the Mercado Abelardo Rodrguez. At the Mercado, you’ll uncover the global impact of the movement through American artists like Marion and Grace Greenwood.  By the end of your tour, you’ll have a deeper understanding of how the Muralist movement wove together personal expression and social struggle to tell powerful human stories.

This tour was amazing and by far one of my favorites. It was the perfect way to learn about Mexican history, culture, politics, and art all in one through the lens of Muralism. Rodrigo did an incredible job of guiding us. He made it interesting for the whole family and imparted his own interesting perspective and insights while also encouraging us to learn more. I highly recommend this tour while visiting Mexico City, especially as precursor to other tours, like Casa Azul.
