Full-Day Montserrat Day Trip from Barcelona with Horse Riding Experience

Experience Montserrat on horseback, where adventure meets tradition

The Finer Details
You’ve read about Montserrat’s serrated mountain, the pilgrimage routes, and the sacred Black Madonna that draws visitors from across the globe - and now you’re ready to experience all of this in person. These are more than just bucket list items; they are world wonders that must be seen the right way, with depth and context to both the land and history.

On this full-day excursion, you’ll begin with a guided horseback ride along the Camino de Santiago trail at an American-style ranch nestled beneath the Montserrat mountain. Here, instead of diving straight into the crowds, you’ll start slowly as you ride an expertly trained horse. Taking in breathtaking views, you’ll learn about the region’s history and landscape.

From there, you’ll travel up the mountain to visit the Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey and the Basilica of Montserrat, including the Black Madonna. At the end of your Montserrat day tour, you’ll have gained a deeper understanding of the region’s cultural and spiritual life and a new appreciation for its rich beauty.

Choose this tour if…

  • You want to experience a unique adventure that is authentic and memorable to Catalan culture.
  • You want to immerse yourself in the rich spiritual history of the monastery without relying on an audio guide.
  • You want to feel connected to the stunning natural landscape of Montserrat.

Route Details

Arriving from Barcelona, your journey begins at an authentic horse ranch. Here you'll be introduced to the ranch’s history and its place within the region’s cultural landscape.

Once in the saddle, you’ll begin a gentle ride through a shaded forest, before reaching a dramatic opening to reveal the breathtaking views of the Montserrat mountain. Along the way, you’ll pause at a 12th-century Romanesque chapel on the ranch, reminding you of the region’s deep spiritual connections. At the end of your ride, you’ll have a relaxing break to enjoy local items from the ranch, including fresh eggs and lunch meat, savoring the flavors of the region.

After leaving the ranch, you’ll head to the Montserrat Abbey, visiting the Virgin of Montserrat (the black Virgin or black Madonna). You’ll learn why La Morenata is of such important cultural and spiritual significance to the Catalonia region.

Time permitting, you may also visit the Museum of Montserrat, whose unique collection ranges from archaeological treasures to works by Monet and Caravaggio.

By the end of your tour, you’ll have a deeper understanding of why Montserrat’s rich history, spiritual connection, and natural beauty have shaped the identity of Catalonia.
