Van Gogh Exhibit Amsterdam

Half-Day Kröller-Müller Museum Day Trip from Amsterdam by Private Car

Journey from Amsterdam to where art and nature unite

The Finer Details
Instead of navigating the packed hallways of the Van Gogh Museum and fighting for a space to only glimpse at Vincent Van Gogh’s most famous works, journey to the Kröller Müller museum, where your appreciation and knowledge for art can truly thrive.

Nestled within the expansive Hoge Veluwe National Park, just over an hour from Amsterdam, the Kröller Müller museum is home to the second-largest Van Gogh collection in the world. Yet it still remains largely off the typical tourist radar. Here, accompanied by an art historian, you can fully immerse yourself in the depth of Van Gogh’s extensive collection. Go beyond Starry Night to see the full breadth of his work, such as The Potato Eaters and Bridge at Arles, gaining a more profound understanding of his cultural and artistic legacy.

The museum itself is the realization of Helene Kröller Müller's early 20th century vision. An art collector ahead of her time, she was the first major patron to recognize Van Gogh’s genius and the only person known to have purchased one of his paintings during a public exhibition in his lifetime. Her philosophy of connecting art and nature still defines the museum’s experience today. In the quiet beauty of the Dutch countryside, you’ll engage with art on a deeper, more intellectually fulfilling level.

Route Details

Arriving from Amsterdam, you’ll start your journey in the vast sculpture garden, exploring iconic works by artists like Jean Dubuffet, Marta Pan, and Claes Oldenburg. Along the way, your expert will introduce you to Helene Kröller-Müller’s philosophy and the fascinating story behind the museum’s creation.

Once inside the museum, follow a curated journey tracing the development of early modernism shaped by Kröller-Müller’s personal collection. With your expert guide by your side, you’ll uncover how artists like Jan Toorop and Georges Seurat used techniques and symbolism to lay the groundwork for modern art.

A highlight of the visit is the Van Gogh Gallery. Here, you’ll trace Van Gogh’s artistic evolution from his dark, somber early Dutch beginnings to the luminous emotional intensity of his later years. Learn why Kröller Müller considered him “one of the great spirits of modern art,” and how her support played a critical role in transforming his legacy.

The tour concludes with the rise of 20th-century movements, including Cubism, Futurism, and De Stijl, featuring works by Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Bart van der Leck. Your expert guide will explain how these artists broke from tradition to redefine modern art. By the end of your tour, you’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for how one woman’s vision shaped not only a museum, but the way we experience modern art today.
